Affirmations to spread the self-love this Valentine's Day

Have you noticed your child feeling a bit down on themselves and life in general lately? Does it feel like you're listening to an endless loop of:

"I'm so dumb."

"I hate this."

"I can't do it."

"This sucks."

"This is stupid."

Are you nodding your head? If so, you might have a case of pandemic fatigue on your hands.

Normal sources of self-esteem are lacking or altogether absent this year. Your child isn't receiving positive feedback from in-person peer and teacher interactions. She isn't getting the opportunity to feel like a MVP on the soccer field or a future Oscar winner in her high school play.

It's not surprising that many parents are reporting a drop in their child's self-esteem and an increase in negative self-talk.

As parents, we might also be unintentionally contributing to this drop in self-esteem. With our competing responsibilities stretching us to near breaking point, we might find ourselves directing more criticism than praise towards our children.

So with Valentine's Day right around the corner, what better opportunity could there be to spread some self-love?

Here are two tools to give your child's self-esteem and positive self-talk a boost:

Everything I Love About You Notes:

One of our favorite Valentine's Day traditions in my house is to leave heart-shaped notes on my children's doors each night of the week leading up to Valentine's Day. I describe something I love about them on each heart. Every morning they wake up so excited to see what new heart has been added to their doors.

In a year where yelling and nagging might be more common than you'd like, this opportunity to remind your child (and yourself!) of everything you love about them might just be the antidote you're looking for. Click here to download your printable love notes.

Affirmations:

Affirmations can be incredibly powerful in boosting self-esteem, resilience, and encouraging grit and

perseverance. Here's a video of easy affirmations to share with your child. Save it and watch it whenever your child needs a boost or work together to write your own and make it a habit to read them daily.
